WebbThe modern pen was created by an Hungarian-Argentine called Biro and the first trademark was "birome" and that's still one of the names used in Argentina for naming a pen besides "lapicera". "Bolígrafo" is sometimes used and understood here and in all the Spanish speaking world, I believe. WebbSpain accounts for less than 10% of native Spanish speakers so it would have made little sense for Duolingo to teach that version. It's mostly Latin American Spanish. A few words are a lot more commonly used in Spain but those are exceptions. Yet some of language learning sites only teach Spain Spanish.

WebbI’ve noticed some of the vocabulary in Duolingo is Castilian, even though people claim it teaches Latin American Spanish. I’ve seen “camarero” for waiter, instead of “mesero”.
