To expand you'll have to fight other minor and major factions letting you reap battle experience. Sun Jian is perfect to learn the building, goverment and economics of the game. Don't pay attention to the difficulty scaling that the game claims each character has, they're almost certainly wrong. The only way to find out what's easiest for you is to keep trying random characters until you find the right playstyle. #5

WebIt is very fair and so possibly the easiest Total War game (you are a human with the brain, you will stomp an AI on a fair fight). I didn't like it on launch, played 2800 hours of WRE and ERE on Attila, then had a blast this year when I went back to ToB and played almost all the factions. WebShogun 2 is one of my favourite Total War games of all-time but realm divide is a unique mechanic in this game only. I found that if you build a strong navy with foreign ships you can survive realm divide easily but as a mechanic it sucks when no one wants peace and your only income is from taxes.
