The disengagement theory of ageing states that "aging is an inevitable, mutual withdrawal or disengagement, resulting in decreased interaction between the aging person and others in the social system he belongs to". The theory claims that it is natural and acceptable for older adults to withdraw from society. There are multiple variations on disengagement theory, such as moral disengagement. Webtheory, the thesis argued the desirability of disengagement as a way of maintaining social stability. But Cummings and Henry's grounds were also psychological. They suggested that, freed from the constraint of norms associated with previous responsibilities, elderly people actually become content to live within their own self-centered worlds
